Time Management

How good is your time management I know my mine is not very good. Spending most of your time on unfocussed efforts results in less been achieved. Being busy is not a sign of achieving more, if you’re not concentrating on the right things that matter. This is even more important when combining home life and working on a new venture.

One area where time can be saved is, by being able to ask the right people, to get the right answers to your questions. By doing this you are now more focused in your efforts. Resulting in you solving a problem more efficiently. This also makes the task you are trying to complete less stressful.

When something becomes less stressful you are more likely to complete that task and may even look forward to repeating it. This is even more important when trying to be successful in a new venture. By having the right skills and resources in place, all help in keeping procrastination at bay.

Having an action plan can help with time management. This helps you think about what you have to achieve to reach your goal. It can help monitor your progress and get help where you need it. Start with small tasks so you can get a sense of achievement so the rest of the project is not so overwhelming.

  1. Ah….time and tide wait for no man. I wonder who said that.

What I have become to realise is that the older you get the qucicker time seems to go. Now I don’t know whether becuase I have got more things to do everyday of just that I am taking longer to do things as it is, but I just seem to keep on running out of time.

We all have perceptions of what is precious to us, but as we grow older and, hopefully, more wiser, we begin to realise that time is one of the most precious commodities of them all and should be used carefully.

One solution I have developed is to, every morning, usually in my bath, map out my day’s activities very carefully and try and stick to that time map as best as possible. That schedule also includes rest breaks and catch up periods. It actually make the day last a bit longer and clears the confusion of what should I do next.

I also keep a quite detailed diary of things to do and when, which of course helps with the old memory, and is useful for setting up the next days activities.

All it takes is a bit of organisation.

Now what’s next on the list to do…

  2. Hi Andrew,
Yeh, Time management is very important to get ride of stress and get things done. Specially if we have a lot of stuff to achieve in a day. What I do is in the morning I just write down what I have to do. In the beginning I was very optimistic and I try to do too many things in a day. After that I became realistic and evaluate roughly how long each task will take. And I do not forget to break down the big tasks in small ones. That makes it easy to achieve.
    Thanks for the nice topic.

  3. Hi Phil

I’ll be honest, my time management could be much better sometimes. Although I know that I can do something my mind will always tend to wonder in another direction……like now for example, I am actually in the middle of writing a blog post but my mind is wondering and I’m going around visiting blogs :) ….but liking what I see in the process.

Time management is really important along with prioritization. It’s a really important part of IM but then I guess it’s an important part of any job in life.

    Take Care
    Ben

  5. Hi Andrew, Nice post. In fact all of them are thoughtful and relevant.
Time management, especially on the internet is a huge problem for me because you see one thing and go clicking along to the next. It is hard not to get drawn in. Ruthless discipline is all that works for me. Applying the old saying ” list your work and work your list,” is a good way to go as you say.
There are no shortcuts to this business, or any other for that matter. You have to work at it. Regards, Brian.

  6. Hi Andrew,
great post. IMO, time mgt is as important as any money-making skill we will ever learn in internet marketing. It does not help that internet marketing itself provides a lot of distractions with new products launched and new strategies coming out every other day. To make steady progress, we need to exercise patience and learn to adopt the 80/20 rule – doing things that matter most e.g. creating a good post rather than checking email and surfing. I have problem with restraining my surfing habit though – often fooling myself I’m doing research while I’m actually reading frivolous stuff for self-entertainment.

  7. Uau !

Message to Phil: (“One solution I have developed is to, every morning, usually in my BATH, map out my day’s activities very carefully and try and stick to that time map as best as possible.”) Have a shower instead of a bath – it’s quicker and so will give you more time ;-)

  12. Hello Andrew,

I like your time management post, also the comments made above. It certainly has given me food for thought as I know my time management skill are useless. I keep thinking about getting a time management course from somewhere. Now, there’s an idea for a product eh?

Look forward to more great posts.
